Yesterday morning

Just a quick one.  Yesterday morning we had the best peaceful moment that I decided to sleep in.  The sun was shining, but it was cool in the room and warm under the covers.  Olivia and I were cuddling, Kevin was sleeping quietly, even the dogs were quiet.  I was loathe to break up that moment, so I reset the alarm several times and enjoyed it. :)

This morning, Olivia awoke at 6:20 and was happy as could be.  Also a lovely morning.

Now we are driving to work...  almost the weekend.

Memorial Day in Maryland

Last week was very busy with work travel for both Kevin and me.  Thank goodness for Charlie and Aunt Kathy to the rescue!  Charlie dropped Olivia off at daycare Tuesday and Wednesday so Kevin could get in to work on time, and make his flight, while I was gone.  He picked Olivia up Wednesday afternoon, and Kathy came over after work and spent the night, watching Olivia until I returned from my trip to CT / MA.  We would have been in serious trouble without the family helping out!

The next evening (Thursday), Olivia and I hopped on a red-eye plane home to MD for the long weekend.  Kevin didn't return home until the next day, so we missed one another.

The weekend at Grandparent-B's house was fabulous!  Annie was home for an interview Friday morning - the position would be in Oakland, but headquarters are in MD.  Poor Walter was home with Hand, Foot & Mouth virus, and Joel was under the weather as well.  They had originally planned to come to the Country Home too, but instead, Annie traveled alone on the bus.

Sarah was in town too - she was actually the first one to book travel to MD, and Annie and I decided to join up.  This was an opportunity for Aunt Sarah to finally meet Olivia - very nice.  They got along swimmingly from the beginning!

Friday night, we had a Financial Planning meeting with the core family - very productive, lot of wine consumed.  Action Items all around - including for Kevin and me to set up our own affairs to protect little Olivia. We'll have to work through everything over the next few weeks/months and make sure the important things close (feels like work to me)

Olivia was impressive - she immediately adjusted to East Coast time.  Little girl was pleasant as can be when we awoke on Friday.  She slept well on the red-eye, then napped in the car on the way home from the airport.  After that siesta, she awoke, met Sarah, and was entertaining until naptime around noon or so.  Olivia went to bed around 7 or so and was basically down for the night!  She was so good all weekend - pleasant, with a regular sleep schedule.  I was so proud of her. :)  The entertainment part is that little Olivia is semi-crawling now.  We had fun with Mum-Mums and Pop-Pops on the floor in the family room, coaxing Olivia to crawl with toys jussssst out of reach! :)  By the end of the weekend, she was also starting to pull up on things and with a little help would pull up to standing and was happy as could be!  Olivia loved playing with all the new toys, and that rug at the Country Home is so interesting on its own.  What fun!

Aunt Sarah and Mary Ellen dropped by on Friday to say hello - nice little visit.

Saturday was also Olivia's 10 month birthday - my little girl is getting Sooooo Big!  Annie ended up driving home with Mary Ellen on Saturday, she wanted to be home with her family.  And by that time, Annie was coming down with something as well, not to mention allergies.  The weather was absolutely fabulous, and everything is lush, green, and in bloom in MD right now - GLORIOUS!

Oh, I think it was Friday afternoon too that we all went for a walk along the canal - beautiful, and felt so good to be moving around.  I sit entirely too much every day.  At some point we also went through several boxes of old stuff from our own childhoods.  We mostly worked through Annie and Sarah's stuff - I was busy holding Olivia and staying out of the way. :)

We ate dinner out on the deck Saturday - delicious lemon salmon.  Olivia even joined us. :)  She's such a good eater.  I think that night we watched some depressing movie.

Sunday we went to the zoo!  First we had delicious blueberry french toast casserole, then we headed out to the zoo when we could.  Olivia was up just before 7 am each morning, so we had breakfast by 8am.  Unfortunately, I forgot a few key thing when we left for the zoo and poor Olivia was so tired and hungry/cranky that we had some moments at the zoo.  We took turns carrying little girl, she was having fun trying to bite me, but eventually I just sat on a shaded bench and nursed her - that helped a bit. We did manage to see the lions and the baby panda - check!  Olivia remained awake the whole car ride home, but then took a nap at the house.

Sunday evening we hosted a cookout and several Aunts, Uncles, and the Morrisons joined in.  Becca Morrison is getting married soon - so exciting!  I have to send a gift!   Olivia was still entertaining, albeit dirty!  Cousin Mazzie graduated from Elon that weekend, so Nor Nor and Tim had some fun stories about their trip down to North Carolina - unique hotel experience!

Again, Olivia went to bed easily... in preparation for the long flight home in the morning.  Mom and I went out to purchase pre-mixed formula for the flight because I only had enough powder for one bottle.... as it turned out, Olivia would not drink that formula!  Utterly refused (I tasted it - and don't blame her)  Dad took Sarah to the airport, and shortly after, Mom, Olivia and I left.   Olivia remained awake and fairly fussy for most of the flight - I think she was just over tired and maybe her teeth were hurting her.

Olivia's fourth tooth has broken the surface!   It's the top right one.  She's been biting my arm and chest pretty good.  I gave up my last pumping slot at work and now pump one bottle as soon as we are home.  I don't really nurse her during the day since Olivia tends to bit and it's super painful.  At the 2am wakeup, I'll still nurse her in bed, but I'm not sure how much longer that is going to last.  So, we made it 10 months - I think that's pretty good.

Kevin picked us up from the airport Monday morning and we grabbed lunch, then I tried to sleep to recover for a bit, but Olivia was awake and playing with pops :)  So cute

Overall, a lovely weekend - my sisters look fantastic, and having the "planning" talk was part of our objectives for the weekend.

OK, bedtime.  I'll add photos later (Hopefully tomorrow... I have to download from the fancy camera)

Nighty Night, Sleep tight.  Don't let the bed bugs bite!

Great America

First time in shades... ready to take on the amusement park!

Olivia took her first ride on the Merry-Go-Round today at Great America!  She seemed to kinda like it too!  Kevin, Kathy, Olivia and Mom went to the park with the free Lockheed Family Day tickets and had a lovely afternoon.  Kathy and I rode the tower drop ride and Kevin and I rode the "Flight Line" (formerly Top Gun) rollercoaster.  Fun day.  Olivia had a nice ~2 hour nap before we went to the park, and snoozed in the stroller with Kathy while Kev and I waited in line.

Otherwise, Olivia is doing well.  I went out and purchased more pajamas for a 12 month old.  As it turns out, it's hard to find footsie pajamas for this age - presumably because most babies are walking at this point and footsies are slippery!  No matter, Olivia has some VERY cute pjs to start wearing.  Lots of photos to come!

I managed to do two "chore" type things today... 1) Set up a 529 CA college savings account for Olivia.  From what I've read, if you think your kid will go to college, this one is a no brainer.  2) Purhased a 5-gallon Shooting Star hydrangea - beautiful!  That one is meant for the back left corner of the yard.  I just hope the small one in the back right corner lives through the summer.

Tomorrow we plan to put the two Japanese Maples in the ground (and hopefully they will return somewhat to health... and shade the hydrangeas!)  We'll also go out to dinner for Delores' birthday.

OK, time to purchase a few things for Hawaii and skim a magazine.  Last night I fell asleep before Olivia did - complete with contacts and makeup still applied!  Gnight!

First Mother's Day, and Olivia Backs herself into a Corner

It's always late by the time I get around to pulling up the blog.

Olivia is scooting around on that belly of hers now, and clapping her hands and High-5s are some of her favorite games!  We're working on waving good-bye and blowing kisses.  She has a special protest when something is out of reach, or she's unhappy you took something away.  All veryyyy cute!  Here are a few cute photos leading up to Mother's Day.  Olivia scooted herself back into a corner the other day - ans was very proud and curious investigating everything.  It's time to baby proof!  (and drop her crib mattress lower)
Interesting thing this is

Clap, clap, clap your hands!  Clap your hands with Mommy

Mom, I'm stuck!  Where am I?

Interesting new toy

Back to normal!

So many holes in the Bob tire tube!

Saturday before Mother's Day Kevin went to Pacifica and installed 5 windows at Kathy & Dave's house with Kathy and Charlie.  Yay progress!!  Meanwhile, I stayed home with Olivia to go to music class, except.... Princess made up for not napping at daycare and took a 2.5 hour nap in the morning (and 2 hours in the afternoon).  Fine by me, I managed to plant 5 plants and put down 5 bags of mulch as well as mulch the veggie garden.  Yay progress!  I'll have to take a photo of the backyard this weekend to include in the blog.  There are pretty good plants all along the back fence, I even threw down some zinnia and dahlia seeds that I really hope decide to come up.  Unfortunately, it's been in the 90s this week so I'm hoping everything isn't fried.

By then end of all that yard work, I was feeling under the weather - dehydrated is what I thought was going on.  So I went to bed early and was just low key when Kevin returned home.

My first Olivia-Art.  How appropriate for Mother's Day!

Sunday, Mother's Day, Kevin took care of Olivia in the morning so Mom could sleep in!  When I finally arose around 10am, Kevin and Olivia had a balloon, card and flowers waiting for me!  I love my little family!  Kevin then made his breakfast specialty - crepes!  Delish!!!!  Very nice gift.

Shortly thereafter, I was down for the count.  I ended up nursing Olivia to sleep in bed and Kevin and Olivia slept for 3 hours, during some of which I tried to accomplish a few small tasks, but mostly just lounged on the couch with alternating fever and chills and a stomach ache.  Weirdest thing ever.  I still have no idea what it was.  Thus, a very low key Mother's Day, which was fine with me.

This coming weekend we were thinking of going to Great America Saturday, but are waiting to hear from some of Kevin's extended family to see if they want to go.  If not, then we likely won't go - no point until Olivia is older and I'd rather take her to music class since we missed it again last weekend!  I don't think I'll sign us up for music again next quarter.  I like having a scheduled activity to do with my little girl, but her naps are so unpredictable that we end up missing a fair number of them and that's a waste of money.

OK, sleepy night-night time.  :)

Random Cute Series of Photos

When I was trying to nurse Olivia out on the back patio, she had other plans... like eating my hat and pushing mom around!

Family Camping - A Whole New Experience

Olivia not so sure about this camping idea.

<Late Posting... trying to catch up.  We camped 5/4-6>

I'm so proud of us for going camping for our anniversary!  Olivia was a good little girl, and a bit overwhelmed by the change to her schedule.

We were so busy on Saturday that we didn't quite have a chance to pack and get everything ready in advance.  I'll admit, I was interested in planting my new plants in the backyard before they died.  I forget what Kevin was up to during the day.  In the evening, we had Nathan and Sarah's wedding reception out in Brentwood (~1 hour away).  They came to our baby shower, and this was an ideal time to introduce Olivia to a bunch of the Janeiro side of the family - Elmira was very happy that we were using the blanket she had crocheted for Olivia (good thinking, mom!).  Olivia was a trooper and entertained everyone far past her bedtime.  At 9:30, mom called it quits and we left.  Olivia promptly fell asleep in the car.

A chance to sit in the Captain's Seat in Monterey!  How fun!
Sunday was the scramble to pull out our camping gear (good job, dad!), drop off the dogs (nope, they weren't invited this time), and pack the cooler.  We left around 1pm I think.  Grabbed subs on our way out the door and took a detour through Monterey because Olivia had woken and was hungry.  I nursed her in the car with an ocean view - lovely!  Gorgeous day.

Darn it!  Backseat again!  I'll never enjoy this carseat again!

Another snack attack!  Pit stop at a turnout on Route 1!

Dad setting up camp, whilst....
The drive was a bit longer than expected.  Lime Kiln SP is south of the Ventana Inn and further down  route 1 than Kevin had ever been.  We were given a campsite up in the redwoods.... Mom didn't like it at first and had the nice people change our spot to the creek side - but then Dad had them change it back because the original site was more secluded and all the stuff was out of the car - dad chose correctly.  The original site was WAY better.

Mom and Olivia "supervise"
And then.... it was time to set up camp.  We put together the pack N Play for Olivia to play in while we set up the tent but she was having *nothing* of it!  She was like Trixie near water.... the closer Trixie gets, the faster her legs to the doggie paddle.  The closer Olivia got to the PNP, the louder she protested.  So, Mom held her while dad single-handedly set everything up and started a fire.  He's a keeper.  We were fortunate to arrive when we did - any later and some of that activity would have taken place in the dark.
"What's up with that?!"
Olivia was a little overwhelmed and tired from a long day of sleeping in the car.  Eventually, mom just took her into the car (with the doors closed, no one could hear her crying) and nursed her to sleep.  We put her down in the PNP in the tent and had a nice ploughsman's board dinner with Tequila & OJ - DELISH!  Everything was perfect.  Eventually, mom turned in first while dad watched the fire die.  Somwhere around midnight, O awoke and I brought her into my sleeping bag to warm her up and nurse her.  When I eventually swapped sides, she awoke and was inconsolable.  Solution?  Back to the car!  O and mom slept in the car from ~ 4am - ~8 am.  She actually fell right asleep when I started nursing her in the car, so it just seemed easier to stay there.

New toy!  Chips!
Back to the green stuff. Doh!

But I sure am cute in this little hat. :)

Creek running through campsite
The next morning (our anniversary), we were all a tad bleary-eyed.  Dad made delicious omelets (on the second try when he had the gas figured out) and Mom took care of Olivia.  At this time, mom realized her deficiencies in packing clothes for Olivia - not enough warm stuff... and she's outgrown 9 month clothes.  Thus, lots of blankets.  We wandered down to the ocean side of the park and appreciated our redwood camping site even more.  Once that was done, we were all ready for a break.... into the car for an auto hike!  Perfect!  We drove south on route 1 to Ragged Point where there's a lovely resort.  There, we had lunch and lingered for a good while out on the nice grass, warmed by the sun and cooled by a slight breeze - divine!  Dad took a catnap, Mom played with O and kept her hat from blowing off.  We watched them set up for a wedding and eventually, probably around 4, decided to head back to the campground.

Thanks Cousin Walter for this fancy windsuit!
Checking the surf with Dad

Smoochie Smoochie!

View from beach into campsite - yes that's route 1 above!

Dad's sweatshirt is still fascinating
My hat isn't as interesting

Mom's fleece on the other hand... what *is* this 'zipper' thing?!

Mom!  Dad's snoring again.

I love this weird caterpillar thingy!

Now I'm a MONSTER - ROARR!

All this scenery, and Olivia's still fascinated by the caterpillar (and Mom still has her lists with her)

Romantic Anniversary Dinner - with candlelight
O was a bit cranky, and mom was smart this time - it was chilly, so I nursed her to sleep in my sleeping bag.  She fell right asleep and was snug as a bug.  We had sausage hot dogs for our anniversary dinner and red wine (does *not* go with sausages).  Kevin was the chef again.  What a great catch!  Then we hung out by the fire, shifting to avoid the smoke, and people watching.  This night a group of college-age kids moved in right next to where Mom had tried to change our camp site  They were having a great time, drinking, playing some music (pretty quiet) and socializing with the California Conservation Corps (CCC) guys who had been there for a week or so working on trails.  This was a moment when I acknowledged that I'm old.  :)  It looked like a great time, and I could think of nothing better than going to sleep. :)  So we turned in and all slept at least a little better than the night before.  It was colder this second night and I'm glad O was in with me so I could keep her warm (and let's be honest, the little heater was keeping ME warm!)

My two favorite people

Tuesday morning, O was very fussy.  Eventually, Mom just called it, "We're going for a hike!"  There were two passable, 1/2 mile hikes from the campsite - just our speed.  Kevin carried Olivia for the first one - to see a pretty waterfall.  I carried her in this Ergo Baby rip off (half the price) for the second one and she fell right asleep.  That time, we saw the Lime Kilns for which the park is named.

Lime Kilns - Kevin was in love!
Olivia finally asleep in the carrier
Snug as a bug

Back at the camp, we packed up as much as possible while O was sleeping.  It was time to head home.  We stopped a few times along the way, notable by the Big Sur campground where there's a fantastic lunch spot by a big creek.  That was fabulous.  I nursed O in the car before we took off for the long haul home.  She went back to sleep and was out for most of the ride back.  Mom read a good deal from the Western Garden Problem Solver book to try and figure out how to keep our roses healthy.

Happy to be back at daycare - the known world - the next day
Overall, Olivia was quite a trooper!  Mom and Dad are happy to have our first camping experience as a family done, and have lots of ideas for improvement next time (closer, maybe with friends who have kids, pack properly).

Fun times!

And then, we only had a few days of work when we returned. :)

xoxo
